Revels Helping AP Expand Multimedia Reach

Katina Revels, a 1993 graduate, has worked for several prominent news organizations, including the Detroit Free Press and the Associated Press.
Now at the AP, she is working in the newly created Multimedia/News position at the headquarters in New York. Revels’ new position includes producing galleries and multimedia projects.
Revels began her career in visual journalism at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where she built an online photo sales tool for Knight Ridder, which owned the paper at the time. She moved to San Jose, Calif., to work at the Knight Ridder corporate headquarters, where she assisted in expansion of the news organization’s 32 Web sites.
She later joined the AP as a photo editor in Washington, D.C. She later took a position with the Detroit Free Press, where she helped advance print, online and multimedia coverage. She also edited Iraq photographs and helped plan team photo and reporting coverage for the funeral of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
In 2005 she was awarded third place for Picture Editor of the Year by the Michigan Professional Photographers Association. In 2006 she and her co-workers on the the Free Press photo-editing team won third place for The Best of Photojournalism for the Parks coverage and honorable mention for the multipage newspaper documentary.
In 2007 she returned to the AP and was promoted to picture editor for the top stories desk. In 2009 she returned to the photo department for the newly created multimedia position.
Revels has helped aspiring journalists through her work with The National Association of Black Journalists. She continues to contribute to NABJ as Visual Task Force chairwoman.
