The change doesn’t officially take place until August, but the new professor is already feeling the heat. Schulte’s responsibilities increase to updating journalism to be more technologically advanced for the 21st century.
Schulte has been teaching at the UA since August of 2008. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1999 where he studied English Literature. He then received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing of non-fiction from George Mason University in 2004.
When asked why he choose English Literature as a course of study, Schulte said, “I wanted to write for a living.”
Schulte wanted to focus more on hard news, so he chose to become a journalist. He walked into the student newspaper office at Nebraska and eventually became one of the editors. From then on, his career was set in motion.
After graduating from Nebraska, Schulte worked for more than two years at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. While Schulte attended graduate school at George Mason, he also interned at the Washington Post in Washington D.C. and did some freelance work for the paper as well. Also before reaching the UA, Schulte worked for U.S. News and World Report from 2004 to 2008.
Schulte said he enjoys working at the UA and hopes to better equip students for their careers. His efforts include transitioning students into using more multimedia technology, which he believes is the future of journalism.
